I got a message yesterday from my graphic designer that the final components were almost done so I thought that I can should write this post. Wow it’s been a long time but Meet the Manchers is finally ready for prototype print. My gaming group and I had amazing adventure creating this game and I want to share some of the story with you:
First of all the game was intended to be a short card game 15-20 minutes not more, with 3 ways to score, at the end of the game. However the way it scored was somewhat problematic to say the least. There was a lot of counting and each time you had to reorder the cards in different way. Multiply that for every player and you have a real mess on your hands. What is the point of having 15 min game when the end game scoring was also 15 -20 min.
Another missing element was catching up mechanism. Basically the player who lucked out and avoided or won duels would win the game due to the fact that he or she will have the most of the scoring cards. So to mitigate that TM tokens were introduced. Whenever you lose a duel you gain TM token which you can use it later to prevent the same thing from happening twice.
As the time progressed other elements were added like game board which kept track of the different resources players gained over the game, but was quickly dismissed due to the fact that it made the game-play more complicated instead of straightforward. Also the end game scoring was not improved by much, so there was no point for keeping the board.
Finally someone suggested that resource tiles should be introduced to keep track of most elements and that turned out to be the best way to represent the game elements, and tie them closely to the theme. Also another scoring element was introduced a first to get reward, in form of trophies. After months of testing and having fun the final version was finally developed which is the one that goes to KS very soon.
